When you sit down and start examining the issues in your home security plan, the big things will jump out at you right away. You need an alarm and a way to protect your home's perimeters from quick entry. However, should you focus more of your energy on your alarm or on basic, less expensive deterrents? Would you be better served by a watchdog than a weapons arsenal? These questions don't immediately present themselves, but they hint at key issues you should address in any home security plan.
1. How far should your home alarm go? For some homeowners, there appears to be no limit for what they would like to get out of an alarm system. Covering everything from obscure basement corners to seemingly unreachable points on the roof, it might take a special species of bird to activate these motion sensors. But at what cost? Remember, for every impassable point, your family members may be the ones setting the alarm off more often than not, if not always.
2. How many locks are enough? While plotting the extent of you alarm system's reach, you will undoubtedly be faced with the issue of how many locks you should get to protect your doors. While some experts suggest three, it's really more about the quality of lock than the number. Consider the minimum to be two – as long as they are great locks.
3. What should be done with the curtains? Curtains may seem more like a decorative piece around the house rather than a key point in your home security system, but there is more than meets the eye with curtains. For one thing, if you keep your curtains closed, you may be hinting that there is no one at home. If you leave your curtains open, you may be showing off some valuable item inside which a criminal might take a chance at. The best idea is to leave curtains open, but nothing special inside rooms facing the street.
4. Are weapons the answer? If weapons were the great deterrent, houses would have signs saying 'Protected by Smith & Wesson' rather than 'Protected by Monitoring Service and Alarm.' People don't generally believe there is an armed guard waiting on the other side of the door with a loaded rifle, cocked and ready. If you must keep handguns around the house, you will always have to balance safety with accessibility. If you lean too far in either direction, the purpose is defeated.
5. Which types of subtle deterrents continue to drive away burglars? If you look at the list of things which continue to drive burglars away before attempting to rob a house, you may be surprised. It's often the little things. Strong overhead lights, security cameras (real or fake) and merely some lights and a television set working on timers inside will do the trick 99 times out of 100. Sometimes, the smartest home security moves are the simplest.
