How can you remove a tub drain that's rusted out with nothing to grip on?
By the tub drain I mean the metal piece that screws into the tub itself. The part that holds the plug. When I normally remove one there are cross bars at the bottom of it that I can grip onto and turn it. The one I'm doing now has rusted out and has nothing to grip on. How can I turn it to unscrew it and get it out?
Actually, I've removed several of these things when the crossbars have broken out, leaving it in the condition you have. The idea is to cut the sides of the top, (the part that screws in), in two, so that you can use a punch or chisel and bend it inward to collapse it out of the threads of the lower portion. I've used a Dremel tool with a grinding bit of some sort to cut a grove the full length of the side, sometimes a hacksaw blade held straight up and down will cut the top part of the drain into two pieces. They can be a real bear to get out. Sometimes makes me wonder why I do this stuff.
